| Bio: | Jon and Donna McDaniel Skovlin are natives of Wallowa County who have a passion for outlaw and local history. Jon graduated from Oregon State University with B.S. degrees in wildlife and range and has a M.S. degree in forestry from University of Idaho. He worked with the US Forest Service at the Starkey Forest and Range Experiment Station. Donna graduated from OSU where she was active in student publications, working on the newspaper and annual. The Skovlins met at OSU, married, and had four children. They lived most of their lives in Eastern Oregon with the exception of about six years in Kenya. They have had a home in Cove since 1993. A biography, this book relates the life of Hank Vaughn, outlaw in the Pacific Northwest. The subject was heavily researched, resulting in a book featuring citations at the end of each chapter. Hank Vaughan is known in folk tales as an outlaw, horse thief, gunman, desperado, gambler, and drunk. This book chronicles his life and tells how he was known to those around him-as a storyteller and a gentleman. According to this biography, he was also an aggressive person who took advantage of the lawless period in the development of the Pacific Northwest, and who contributed to the folklore about the Wild West. In Pursuit of the McCartys |
The authors wrote this historical biography with the intention of finding new information about the McCarty family-a family that produced three outlaw sons in the late 1800's. The early cattle rustling and horse thievery by the McCarty's eventually led to bank robbery and other serious crimes. The McCarty family history from the 1860's to 1917 is recorded and their trail is followed through Oregon, Colorado, and Washington. There are 121 illustrations and 6 maps. |
