Library Services: Laptop Checkout and Use

Pierce Library is pleased to offer laptop computers for use in the Library only to currently registered students. These laptops provide you with the same functionality as the other networked Library computers. You may search the Internet, and type your papers. Please read the following policies carefully:

Charges

  • Only currently enrolled EOU students may check out laptops. Library laptops are for university-related use only.
  • Before checking out a laptop, the student must read this policy, fill out the User Agreement form, present their EOU ID card and a second photo ID, at the Circ Desk in the Library Mon. - Fri. 8am - 5pm to be processed. A copy of this policy will be given to the student at this time.
  • Upon checkout, the student must again present their EOU ID card and a second photo id. Both ID cards will be kept at the Circulation Desk for the duration of the sign-out period.

Loan Period

  • Laptops are to be used in the Library only for up to 4 hours at a time. All laptops will be returned to the Circulation Desk one half hour before closing time to provide the Library staff time to check the condition of the equipment. A $5 overdue fine will be assessed for turning a machine in later than this. The laptops will stop circulating two hours before library closes.
  • Laptops are available either on a first come, first served basis or by advanced reservation. For a Reservation call 962-3864. The laptop will be held for 15 minutes past the hour of reservation before being released for checkout.

Fines and Liability

  • If the laptop is late, overdue fines will be incurred at $10.00 an hour. Laptops must be returned one half hour before the Library closes. Users who do not return laptops on the day due or do not return them intact will be billed $2,000, a processing fee of $25.00, and any overdue fines incurred. When the Library closes, unreturned laptops will be considered lost.
  • If a laptop is tampered with or damaged, the user will be billed at least the cost of repairing the laptop, and they will lose any rights to future laptop use.
  • A $5.00 charge will be assessed for each security tape removed from the laptop.
  • A $5.00 overdue charge will be assessed if the machine is returned less than 30 minutes before closing.
  • The Library is not responsible for any files left on any laptops or for loss or damage to user file during the loan period.
  • The Library is not responsible for any computer viruses that may be transferred to or from user storage devices.

Security

  • Laptops should never be left unattended.
  • Remember, users are responsible for the full replacement cost of the laptop and any peripherals damaged or made inoperable in any way while it is checked out to the user. This includes but is not limited to loss, spilled food and/or drink, and drop damage.
  • Users must return the laptops to Circulation Desk staff. Laptops should not be left unattended on the Circulation counter.

Hints for Successful Laptop Use

  • Save your work on personal storage devices. Files should not be saved to the laptop hard drive. For maintenance and privacy, all user files will be removed from the laptops periodically.
  • When moving or returning the laptop turn the laptop off.
  • There is a laptop cheat sheet included in the case. This has an item checklist you may use to be sure all items are present.
