Library Services: Reserves (Print Materials)

It is the purpose of a reserve collection to make instructional materials equally available to all members of a class or other designated group when use of these materials has been assigned by an instructor or other responsible person.

Persons wishing to place materials on reserve for class use should notify the Circulation Specialist at least 24 hours in advance. If adequate notification is not given some delay should be anticipated. A "Reserve Materials Request Form" must accompany materials to be placed on reserve. A form must be completed for each class. Instructors are advised to place materials on reserve before distributing the reading list to class members. All materials reserved for class use are automatically removed from reserve at the end of each quarter.

The library staff handles a large volume of reserve material. Following the guidelines below will facilitate speedier service for faculty and quicker access for students:

  • Items should be given to the Circulation Specialist no later than seven working days prior to the date that classes begin. Once classes begin, any items to be placed on reserve take at least two days to process. This should be kept in mind when informing students as to the item's availability.
  • If items are owned by the library and are being placed on reserve, they must be pulled from the shelves and delivered to the Circulation Specialist.
  • Personal items placed on reserve should be picked up and taken back to your office at the end of each quarter, unless prior arrangements have been made with the library.
  • The library staff works during intersessions and through the summer. They are willing to assist faculty with any questions that might arise concerning reserve procedures.

The library maintains a permanent reserve collection. Documentary and institutional materials, placed on reserve for equal access by members of the campus community, are the only items given annual or indefinite status.
