Library Administration: Travel/Staff Development Policy

It is the desire of the Library that all staff have the opportunity for professional development and training. However, due to limited funds it is unlikely that all staff development requests can be approved. Requests must therefore be prioritized.

For training requests, the use of webinars, audiocasts, or online training events is encouraged. For travel requests, top priority will be given to requests to attend to local meetings, and meetings involving the consortia to which the Library belongs – the Sage Library System and the Orbis Cascade Alliance. Priority for travel will also be given to staff who are making a direct contribution at the event – whether through committee participation, event organization, or presentation at a session.

Requests for travel should be submitted to the Library Director on the EOU Travel Authorization and Advance Form. The Library will endeavor to fully fund a minimum of one conference per year per person. Alternative funding from grants (EOU Research and Grants Committee, private foundations, etc.), professional organizations or self-funding should be considered in cases where partial funding is approved or where attendance is approved but travel/training funds are not allocated. Those attending major meetings or training sessions out of area should expect to present a summary for interested staff within a month of the meeting or training.
