Abstract The interviews with Jeannette Baum took place at her home in La Grande. At age 84, she appeared to be healthy and active, though she had had heart by-pass surgery a few years previous to the interview.

The interviewer was Eugene Smith, who completed a ninety-minute interview on April 9, 2003, a one-hour interview on April 23, 2003, and a one-hour follow-up interview on May 14, 2003.
